Lenovo - Essential G770

First that you notice with this laptop is its solid built due to a one-piece metal alloy handrest, which looks great. The cover though is smooth plastic which leaves fingerprints whenever you touch it. The underneath plastic is OK and feels sturdy but nothing more that that. The laptop is quite heavy, not a good option if you want to carry it around. Surely a desktop replacement. The keyboard is first class, although the Enter button is too small for my liking. The touchpad is large and good, although the dotted surface, while a good idea in my view, may not be to everybody liking. Unlike Toshiba it has no volume wheel and you only can adjust the volume on the screen which is a small let down to me. My model with 750 Gb hard drive has one USB 3 port contrary to the specs on this site. This laptop is impressively fast with lots of power and runs very quiet and cool. You have a feeling it just doesn't break sweat with most programs. You can put it on your lap unlike my old one which is getting hot and noisy in 5 min. The screen and graphics are good, but nothing to be too excited about. It switches between Intel and Radeon cards either automatically or manually, but the difference is not big, hardly noticed in fact when running simple software or watching a film on laptop screen. Boot time is 25-35 sec. at the moment which is very impressive, and lenovo includes its own boot optimisation software. It turns off in about 10 sec and even faster than that. But I do not have a lot of programs loaded as yet. It has lenovo face recognition feature which would be fun if only it could recognise my face :) The chip is fastest dual core available ( at least it was in January) and although not as future proof as quad core, it is more than enough for everything I can and will throw at it these days. The laptop is called Essential, but in reality it is more of a "entry level high" end machine. I can not see any corners cut here, bearing in mind that it is not optimised for a highest possible performance but rather for a well balanced one in terms of performance/energy consumption/durability/comfort/price ratio. One thing to be improved it a rather sharp plastic edge around the handrest which is a bit annoying when you lay your hands on the handrest.
So to sum it up: + Fast, very quiet and rather cool to run.
+ Solid feel, large screen with good resolution, great keyboard and handrest.
- Heavy, fingerprints on the cover, sharp edge around the handrest, dark brown colour may not be for everyone. No Blueray.
