Not to mention the support team for this company has vanished. All the links I've gone to for problems, say "No Page" it's a big white, blank page with those two words. Hmmm, duh.
So, if anyone knows support links that are current let me know~ this 877-462-3462 is a mobile company I've never heard of and yet my computer says that's their support phone number. So awesome! They have some common issues and yet give us no geek squad.

I have had my Averatec since 2004. Deployed with it. Within the first couple months, I played sims and handled it with absolute care. Yet the fan stopped working and the computer keyboard (near battery) would burn up, and the computer would shut off. Sometimes restart sometimes not... until it cooled way off. I was frustrated, my computer nerds that deployed with me helped do a complete reboot and re-install software 4 times while deployment. 2 years later my fan started to do the same thing, I did the reboot and used the recover disks myself, and the fan worked great after that. But the dvd/cd reader would work intermittently. Ever since it's become more and more sensitive, thus currently does not work. I have dusted and cleaned, but nothing.
The screen is tall compared to laptops now-a-days.
Too much going on, the computer freezes and I must hold the off button really hard until the laptop shuts off.. I have an external hard drive as the first few months of deployment my averatec crashed and I lost a lot of music.
I use this only to access online (good for picking up signal- wifi) and write college papers, but then sometimes the communication between my laptop and printer don't match, and once again I'm tryin to restart and everything gets lost.
I would say if you can avoid buying an averatec. It's cheap for a reason. If you want something in life to teach you patience, this is the machine for you. I've had it for 7 years and it's still kicking. It's loud as hell now when I turn it on...the last time I had a fan issue I quickly moved everything onto my external and attempted to take apart my computer to see the deal. Figuring I didn't know what to look for, and accepted the fact I may destroy my computer while dissecting. Nope. Found a piece of plastic that blocked my fan, and sure enough, I was able to piece this crap back together.
So I've acquired a love hate relationship with this laptop. I'm told I need more memory. But I feel that's a waste of money- This laptop is bigger than most and heavier than the newer ones. Therefore I would save your money on trying to make your Averatec a different computer.

had mine for 6 years now as well, the fan, totally cloggs the fins on the heat sink. I have had to go in several times, the cd/dvd is junk. i finally modified a sony to replace it, the fit and connections were perfect, how ever i had to make adjustments for the drive door. I had this thing really headed down hill, and hadnt over used it or abused it, dust is the enemy, but in the past month or so, i went in heavy and brought it all back to life and its still going. so with some maintenance, this is a good machine. and at the time i bought it, the price was right. in addition, there are some real pluses to the processor used... you can find more via goole
