I bought an Acer Aspire about three years ago and am moved to write a review by its outstandingly bad reliability, high repair costs and poor support.
I had to replace the graphics card which failed again within the year. Not realising how close I was to the end of the warranty period I was slow to return it for a warranty claim. It took me a few weeks to take it to a local repairer for what I thought was another problem, and it took them a week to tell me it was the graphics card, so it was nearly a year and a week old when I called in to the Acer authorised repairer who replaced the original graphics card. After a further delay of two weeks I was told, Acer would be prepared to honour the warranty except that they had run out of graphics cards for that model – and they weren’t prepared to get one in. I know that they are available and was quoted $266 (or $366?) by another supplier.
So the first graphics card lasted about 2 years and the replacement less than one year and now if I want the computer to work again it will cost another ~$300.
It the intervening period, I also had to replace the external transformer, for which I was charged over $100. This was an intermittent problem for a few weeks before finally failing and caused more grief than you might initially expect.
Incidentally, I am not a heavy user. The computer has rarely moved from my desk at home, and has been subjected only to moderate domestic use.
The computer also had other visits to the repair shop, which I would say were software or BIOS related, rather than hardware.
So now, if I increase my total repair costs to ~$800 I can extend the life of the laptop past 3 years, but with Acer saying that they cannot provide spares, and I have decided to write off the laptop, and write of Acer as a reputable supplier of reliable equipment.

my hard drive failed after six months that i bought my 5920g. Good thing it was under warranty and even salvaged the content of my hard drive. But now exactly 2 years after purchase, my video card failed this time and have to pay for the repair with my own money (around $300). I just cant believe that a $2100 laptop would just last less than 2 years.

After 8 months laptop refused to boot up, would take 4/5 times to get going then after 5 / 10 mins would shut down itself. Sent off for repair and all thay did was reformat the hard drive. Sent it back again after about two weeks, now I'm told it needs a new screen but thay donot know when it is due in. Waiting 4 weeks now, left 8 messages on their answer machines in so called customer service dept and not one call back. If I don't have a reply by next Monday, I'm going to protest outside the shop i bought it from warning other possible buyers about crap acer laptops and even worse customer service.
